Muay Thai
Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is approximately 3000 years old and was battle tested in the wars between Thailand and Burma.
Nowadays Muay Thai is a formal "sport" with regulations, governing bodies and weight classes similar to western boxing.
In the past though, Muay Thai was performed with bare knuckle or later the hands wrapped in rope.
These battles often ended with the combatants badly injured.
Modern Muay Thai is still a hard sport with dedicated fighters but it is now more accessible than ever with a good number of Muay Thai gyms (or "camps") in every town
Thai Boxing is known as the science of eight limbs when describing the weapons used by the boxers.
In full muay thai bouts the weapons used are kicks knees elbows and hands.
All strikes are allowed to head and body. (various rules systems and governing bodies outlaw the use of elbows entirely and knees to the head)
In the modern sport there are multiple levels of competition from full thai rules to no decision "interclubs"
There are various systems within Muay Thai (or some would say parallel to it) Muay Boran - old style boxing, and Krabbi Krabong (literal translation long and short)- the Thai weapons system being just two of them.
At T1 Muay Thai we teach a mixture of the Modern sport (opening the doors to those who wish to compete) and the old style art of Muay Thai
